Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant that prevents the release of an egg during ovulation.
Nexplanon (generic name: etonogestrel) is a contraceptive implant that prevents ovulation and pregnancy. The contraceptive is implanted by a healthcare provider under the skin on the upper arm. Nexplanon is only a contraceptive preventing pregnancy. It does not provide any protection against sexually transmitted diseases or AIDS. Dosage Each implant acts to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years. A doctor must remove it and replace it if continued contraceptive protection is desired.

Side Effects: Mild side effects may occur soon after Nexplanon is implanted. These should clear up within a few days but consult with the prescribing healthcare provider if they persist or worsen. The main side effects that have been reported are: Breast pain or tenderness Dark patches of skin on areas exposed to the sun Irregular menstrual cycles or spotting Nausea Weight gain Pain, redness, or irritation at the injection site There have been some rare occurrences of reactions to the implant. Report immediately to a clinic or ER if any of the following symptoms are felt: Skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat Pain, swelling, or warmth in the leg or shortness of breath and chest pain (may indicate a blood clot) Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever (may indicate gallbladder problems) Increased blood pressure Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, trouble speaking, confusion, trouble walking, loss of balance or coordination, dizziness, severe headache, change in vision (may indicate a stroke) Pain in the right upper abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea, light-colored stool, dark yellow or brown urine, yellowing skin or eyes, unusual weakness or fatigue (may indicate liver injury) New or worsening migraines or headaches Unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor Worsening mood, feelings of depression. Indication: Instead of oral contraceptives, Nexplanon can be prescribed for women who wish to avoid pregnancy.
