Viread requires initial diester hydrolysis for conversion to Viread and subsequent phosphorylations by cellular enzymes to form Viread diphosphate. Viread diphosphate is a weak inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerases α, β, and mitochondrial DNA polymerase Y.
