Elidel (generic name: pimecrolimus) is used to reduce skin inflammation caused by the type of eczema called atopic dermatitis. It is usually prescribed for people who have not responded to other eczema medications such as topical steroids, or who are allergic to steroids. It may also be prescribed to treat the condition known as vitiligo, where areas of the skin lose their natural color as a result of an autoimmune process that destroys the melanin-producing cells. It works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, produced by white blood cells as part of the body’s immune response to allergy or irritation. Cytokines are part of a cascade of events in the skin that results in the irritated area becoming inflamed – red, swollen and itchy. Elidel stops the white blood cells in the skin from producing cytokines and so reduces inflammation. Learn more about dermatitis and eczema here .

Side Effects: Serious side effects from Elidel are rare. However, any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as severe dizziness or trouble with breathing, a rash or itching other than where the cream was applied or swelling of the face, tongue or throat should be reported to your doctor immediately. Common side effects that should clear up within a few days include mild burning or irritation at the site where the cream was applied. Mild headaches may also occur. If they persist or get worse, report this to your healthcare professional or pharmacist promptly.
Indication: Elidel is prescribed to treat the eczema condition known atopic dermatitis, especially when other treatments with steroids have failed or are contraindicated. Atopic dermatitis is an immune reaction to inhaled or ingested substances, and attacks are often accompanied by bouts of asthma and hay fever. Cells in the skin are reacting to a stimulus and causing inflammation. It is also used to treat the autoimmune condition known as vitiligo, where portions of the skin lose their natural color.
