Kyleena (generic name: levonorgestrel) is an intrauterine delivery system (IUD) used for the prevention of contraception for up to five years. After placement inside the womb, it slowly releases a small amount of the hormone levonorgestrel, which produces effects similar to those of the natural female sex hormone progesterone. Progesterone regulates the menstrual cycle and prepares the uterus for a potential pregnancy. After ovulation, it transforms the endometrial lining to support embryo implantation and thickens the cervical mucus to prevent further sperm entry, thereby reducing the likelihood of further fertilization after ovulation has occurred. Synthetic versions of progesterone prevent pregnancy by inhibiting the implantation of an egg, as well as suppressing ovulation. Dosage Insertion and removal of a Kyleena IUS should only be by a physician who has undergone training on this procedure.
