Livalo is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor known as a “statin.” It is used to treat patients with high blood cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia) or imbalanced cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is intended to be used in combination with a heart-healthy diet. Livalo helps lower elevated total cholesterol (TC). In addition, it helps lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), also known as “bad” cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein B (Apo B), and aids in increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Livalo can be used in patients 8 years or older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), a type of high cholesterol that runs in the family.
