Risperdal® (risperidone) is an antipsychotic medication that works by changing the effects of certain chemicals in the brain. It is typically prescribed to treat schizophrenia, as well as the symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) and Tourette’s syndrome. It can also be used to treat symptoms of irritability in autistic children.

Side Effects: There are some uncommon side effects of using Risperdal. If any of these are experienced, refer to a doctor or healthcare provider immediately. In patients with dementia, changes in mental state, sudden weakness, numbness of the face, arms, or legs, or slurred speech. This may be an indication of a stroke A loss of muscle control in the face, tongue, and other body parts. This may be a sign of a condition called tardive dyskinesia. Blood clots A lower level of consciousness, fever, and muscle ache may indicate a condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Painful and prolonged erection in men, also called priapism Severe allergic reaction characterized by a fever, swelling of the face, mouth, or neck, skin rash, redness or irritation The most common side effects may include: Sleepiness Trouble falling asleep and staying asleep Parkinsonism Headache Pneumonia and other infections such as the common cold, ear infection, sinus infection and urinary tract infection Weight gain Dystonia Not all the side effects are listed here. Indication: Risperdal is intended for the treatment of different conditions: Schizophrenia and symptoms of psychotic disorders Bipolar disorder symptoms such as mania Psychotic manifestations in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia Behavioral disorders such as violence, impulsiveness, irritability, and self-aggression in autistic children and adolescents over the age of five. Risperdal is part of a group of drugs called ‘atypical antipsychotics.’ This group of drugs helps by modulating the secretion of different hormones in the brain.
