Vagifem® (estradiol) is a natural form of the hormone estrogen. This medication can be used to treat menopause symptoms and reduce urgency or irritation during urination. It is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication and does not require a prescription.
Vagifem® vaginal suppositories are tablets used to treat symptoms of menopause and may be used in women with or without an intact uterus. Vagifem® is a local vaginal therapy, and for women with an intact uterus, progestogen treatment is not necessary.
For initiation and continuation of treatment of postmenopausal symptoms, the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration should be used.
Recommended initial dose: One vaginal tablet daily for two weeks. Maintenance dose: One vaginal tablet twice a week.
Treatment may be started on any convenient day. If a dose is forgotten, it should be taken as soon as remembered. Double-dosing should be avoided. Side Effects: Allergic reactions like hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat should be referred immediately for emergency medical help. In any instance where you feel these serious side effects, refer as soon as possible to your medical practitioner: – chest pain or heavy feeling – pain spreading to the arm or shoulder – nausea – sweating – general ill feeling – sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body – sudden headache – confusion – problems with vision, speech, or balance – pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs – abnormal vaginal bleeding – pain, swelling, or tenderness in your stomach – jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) a lump in your breast. Less serious side effects may include: – mild nausea or vomiting – loss of appetite – swollen breasts – acne or skin color changes – decreased sex drive – impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm – migraine headaches or dizziness – vaginal pain, dryness, or discomfort – swelling of your ankles or feet – Depression – changes in your menstrual period cycle – break-through bleeding Special warnings and precautions for use exist for patients with Endometrial Hyperplasia and carcinoma. Indication: Vagifem® vaginal suppositories are used to treat symptoms of hormone deficiency due to menopause. Vagifem® is administered intravaginally as a local estrogen therapy by use of an applicator.
